Round Top & Flat Top Islands

We put to sea off Harbor Beach about 7:30 am in a 1 mtr swell but no wind, we were trusting the forecast to hold true for a max 10-15knot wind. Not to be!
Punching through a wave set got us both wet and woke James up enough to put that little bit more mussel into the paddles while I kept us straight, to get beyond the shore line and into a calm rolling swell.
20 minutes into the one hour paddle the wind came up and became choppy, but the tide was still in our favor and by the time we made the shelter of Flat Top the wind was a good 20-25knots.

Plenty of room to muck around on the sheltered water, but not much fun for fishing since the fish had forgot to turn up for us !!! Snorkeling would be easy and safe too.

We headed back the way we had come an hour later, but the tide had turned and the wind was in the opposite direction so we were getting nowhere fast.

We headed to the closest shoreline near the mouth of Mackay's Pioneer River, which took a smooth 20 minutes to land and a 30 minute walk along the beach to fetch the Toyota.
All up it was a lot of fun, being the first time out there and we learned heaps on how to make it easier next time we visit these handy Islands.

Newry Islands

We set out from Victor Creek boat ramp, just out of Seaforth, about 11:30 am with an ebbing tide and trawled across to Mausoleum Island which is a 30 minute paddle. We hooked a nice sized Golden Travelly about half way and took about 15 minutes to land it on board. Great fun letting it drag us around till it got tired.
We could have spent all day at Mausoleum Island as it has some nice beaches but it is not permitted as a fishing area. Will return sometime soon to snorkel.
We paddled to the eastern side of Outer Newry which put us into the sea swell which the Tempo handled well, and rounded the top of the Island past Fish Reef (looks a good spot for spear fishing) back into smoother water and landed on a small stoney clearing between mangroves.
This landing has a path up the side of the Island to the camp area which has a hut with table and seats, a water tank and outer toilet.
We set up our tent and settled in for the evening. Sunset was amazing and wildlife (Billbys) at dark, well, was a little annoying as they kept bumping into the tent till they got the message via flashlight, they weren't needed.
